Friday’s card starts on the ice. Rangers–Capitals gives us a goalie matchup worth checking against the total. Penguins–Blue Jackets gives us a different question: is the goalie news solid enough to touch an over?
Research checked October 9, 2026, at 12:06 p.m. Eastern (EDT). This is a pregame watchlist, with review prices rather than ready-to-bet recommendations. Sportsbook editorial quotes can differ from your account. We have not verified the local settlement terms attached to these exact offers.
Tonight’s slate: four NHL games
The official NHL schedule lists these four games. All times below are Eastern. None of these eight teams appears on the October 8 slate, so none is on the second night of a back-to-back.
| Game | Time | Goalie check |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle at Detroit | 7 p.m. | Daccord expected; Gibson confirmed |
| Rangers at Washington | 7 p.m. | Shesterkin and Thompson confirmed |
| Pittsburgh at Columbus | 7 p.m. | Silovs expected; Talbot confirmed |
| Anaheim at Winnipeg | 8 p.m. | Dostal expected; Stevenson confirmed |
Goalie labels come from RotoWire’s lineup page, a secondary source. “Confirmed” means that service’s label; we have not independently obtained team confirmation. “Expected” remains a projection. Recheck warmups before using any goalie-dependent angle.
First review: Rangers–Capitals under 6
Review ceiling: under 6 at -120 or better, only after lineup and market checks. Keep the number at 6; under 5.5 is a different bet. These are our price filters, not proof of a profitable edge.
BetMGM’s Rangers editorial odds page, observed during this noon check, displayed Rangers +118 / Capitals -145 on the moneyline; Rangers +1.5 (-210) / Capitals -1.5 (+170) on the puck line; and over 6 (+100) / under 6 (-120). Those are published quotes, not an authenticated Ontario offer. Use the NHL’s 7 p.m. Eastern start time rather than the page’s EST label.
Why look at the under? The NHL’s matchup data lists Igor Shesterkin with a .926 save percentage and 1.75 goals-against average through four appearances. Logan Thompson has a .921 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average through two. Save percentage is the share of shots stopped; goals-against average measures goals allowed per 60 minutes. Those early numbers give us a reason to inspect the matchup, but two to four games is a tiny sample.
What could break it: penalties, a rough first period, empty-net goals, or a late lineup change. RotoWire lists Washington defenseman Matt Roy out and Rasmus Sandin on injured reserve. Missing defenders weaken a goalie-led under case. At -120, you need to win more than about 54.5% of decided bets to break even; we have not established that probability.
Pass if: either starter changes, the price gets worse than -120, the line falls to 5.5, or you cannot verify whether overtime and shootouts count. A good-looking goalie matchup does not make every price good.
Second review: Penguins–Columbus over 6.5
Review ceiling: over 6.5 at -110 or better, with the goalie question settled first. This stays behind Rangers–Capitals on the research list because Pittsburgh’s starter is projected.
BetMGM’s Penguins editorial odds page, observed during the same check, displayed Pittsburgh +105 / Columbus -125; Pittsburgh +1.5 (-225) / Columbus -1.5 (+185); and over 6.5 (-110) / under 6.5 (-110). Again, these are editorial quotes, not verified account prices.
The official NHL matchup feed has Pittsburgh at 2–2–0 and Columbus at 1–1–0. Their team goals-against averages are 3.25 and 3.50, respectively. That makes the total worth a closer look, not an automatic over: the samples are only four and two games, and Cam Talbot has no season appearances in that feed. Do not treat Columbus’s team average as his personal form.
What we still need: confirmation of Arturs Silovs, both final lineups, and the exact full-game market terms. RotoWire lists Pittsburgh’s Justin Brazeau and Ryan Graves on injured reserve. Availability can affect both scoring depth and defensive play.
What could break it: strong goaltending, fewer power plays, or a game that never opens up. Over 6.5 needs seven goals under the applicable settlement rules. At -110, the break-even win rate is about 52.4%; the early goals-against figures do not prove we clear it. Pass at 7 or at a worse price rather than stretching the argument.
The other games: information first
Seattle–Detroit: wait on Daccord’s status. Anaheim–Winnipeg: wait on Dostal and check Winnipeg’s defense; RotoWire lists Josh Morrissey day-to-day and Anaheim’s Troy Terry on long-term injured reserve. We do not have a verified noon account quote for either game or for a relevant player prop, so there is no price-backed pick here.
College football: Louisville’s official schedule has Florida State visiting at 7 p.m. Eastern. The ESPN slate also lists Iowa–Washington, Washington State–Utah State and Wyoming–San José State at 9 p.m., followed by Iowa State–BYU at 10:15 p.m.
We checked BetMGM’s Florida State–Louisville preview, dated October 6. Its total-price table does not label the over and under sides clearly, and it is not a fresh account quote. With final player availability also unverified, football stays a watchlist. Before betting, check quarterback availability, offensive-line changes, weather and a current two-sided price.
Basketball and baseball: ESPN lists Memphis–Chicago at 8 p.m. as NBA preseason; verify minutes plans before player props. Houston–Dallas is already final and is excluded from pregame consideration. The MLB schedule feed returns no games for today at this check, so we are not manufacturing a playoff pick.
Check the market before building the slip
The NHL reviews above are intended for full-game totals including overtime and shootout settlement. They are not regulation-only angles. We cannot confirm that the editorial offers carry those exact terms in your jurisdiction, which is why they remain watchlist items.
For a concrete, limited example, MGM Springfield’s March 12, 2026 rules, printed pages 58–59, include overtime in pregame hockey moneylines, puck lines and totals unless marked Regular Time. A shootout adds one goal to the winner and game total. Those venue rules do not verify an Ontario account’s terms.
Keep today’s two reviews separate. One is an under, one is an over, and both can lose. Confirm the price, starters, lineup and rules before deciding whether either belongs on your card. If an important check stays unanswered, passing is a complete decision.
